🧛🏿♀️ Flex's Reccs: Regressing, Binging and Dune 🏩
iOsFlex™️ system update complete.
💅🏾 Regressing
It happened again.
I woke up with a compulsion to Not Be Blonde anymore. Thus resulting in me running to the shops at 7:30pm to make the fantasy a reality.
Naturally this was spurred on by a dream (that actually wasn’t a nightmare, I promise), which played out like a memory. As in, the dream was a call back to the time I attempted to go blonde 10 years ago, did a terrible job (so unlike me) and had no intention of living with the consequences. So that same night, in an attempt to right my wrongs, I slapped some black box dye over it which ofcourse turned it green. It looked horrible, but my optimistic mental narrative convinced me that it was fine and that any insecurities I had around it could not be percieved by anyone outside of my brain.
You could imagine my surprise when I went into work (I was 2IC of a shoe store) and my manager immediately said “Whoa what happened to you????????”. WHILE POINTING AT MY HEAD. Then when I got home (still in the dream btw) I attempted to fix it, and I ended up with third degree burns around my crown.
I say this to say, I have my natural hair colour again and can reclaim all the hours lost to Blonde Maintenance™️. Sometimes in order to go forwards … one must … go backwards.
I’m not retrogressing, yet I fear society is.
💍 Binging
It’s important that I never EVER forget that my lust for life is directly tied to reading. I jest, the key is really escapism.
In the last 2 weeks, I’ve read 8 books from the Black Dagger Brotherhood series and I’ve feel both energised and settled. It is simultaneously NOT the best series I’ve ever read and somehow the best series I’ve ever read, simply because it feels like I’m revisiting a chapter of my adolescence that I abandoned.
IS CLOSURE REAL? Who knows. But I would love to know what 16 year old Lil who stopped at Book 6 would feel knowing that there are 22 WHOLE BOOKS TO BULLDOZE THROUGH.
Unfortunately highs can’t exist without lows and I’m learning that I have one week to peel myself away from this series, in favour of something else before ALL BOOKS LOSE THEIR APPEAL. I’ve got plenty of dopamine fixes in the digital library ready to go, fear not.
Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson
Three Body Problem by Liu Cixin (60% through!!)
Zodiac Academy by Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti
The Fifth Season by N.K Jemisin
👿 Dune
I’ll be the first to sing praises to the masterpiece that is my social media algorithm. The human-robot engineers that know how to feed me just enough interesting content to keep me on the virtual hamster wheel should be applauded for ther ingenuity.
However, I’m deducting points purely for the fact that I had to manufacture my own hype for Dune after watching Dune 2. WAS THAT THE BEST MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN????? POTENTIALLY!!! WHY HASN’T MY TIKTOK BEEN CLOGGED WITH VIDEO ESSAYS????
The obvious colonial-romance storyline is played out, but what really got me is the concept of religious sowing/engineering (effortlessly administered by the Bene Gesserit).
This exclusive sisterhood whose members train their bodies and minds through years of physical and mental conditioning, that results in them cultivating superhuman powers that SEEM magical to outsiders. But maybe they are ACTUALLY magical?
Anyway they spread "infectious superstitions on primitive worlds providing the perfect opp for the BG to later position themselves as protectors in order to manipulate the people who believe. They create the issue, then position themselves as the saviours to lead the people they oppress into salvation. WTF!!!! When you draw parallels to this “fiction” made in the 60s and life now … send help.
I *knew* that Paul wasn’t the Lisan al-Gaib. He knew it. He told the Fremen he wasn’t, and yet circumstance had made it so we all still thought he was. Paul as the Lisan al-Gaib is a hyperstition!!!!
